About this photo: The king of the savanna spends his mornings and evenings patrolling the pride’s territory for any trespassers. Yet here I am, in his way.

“We’re on top of the food chain.” Yes we are, but national parks and reserves are frozen in time. They’re a representation of the past without the consequences of the present.

Which is why it’s terrifying to think, at any given moment, a lion could see us as a threat. A scenario where our opposable thumbs hold no significance, as opposed to the context of the modern world’s obsession with logic.

However, the king knows his opposition, and the battle isn’t against a man with a camera. His defence is against those who want to replace him. Not the admirers.
